Review on disaster-prone basaltic geological bodies and fiber utilization technologies

    • Basaltic disaster-prone geological bodies are widely developed across China and have historically resulted in significant mass casualties. This paper summarizes the types and causative mechanisms of disasters based on representative examples, including the Emeishan basalt strata, Cenozoic basalt strata, and basaltic platforms. Breakthroughs in basalt fiber technology are discussed, with a focus on the mechanical properties of basalt fiber reinforcements, steel-basalt fiber composite reinforcements, and basalt fiber protective cables and nets. Based on the technology for waste utilization from geological disasters such as landslides and debris flow deposits, the paper proposes a dual-effect model that integrates disaster mitigation with resource utilization. This includes the development of basalt composite reinforcement products, and their application in the transformation and stabilization of disaster-prone geological bodies. Finally, the study outlines prospective methods and engineering case studies for the dual-effect model of managing and utilizing basalt disaster-prone geological bodies tailored to different types, regions, and causative conditions of basaltic hazards, and discusses future research directions for disaster prevention engineering based on rigid-flexible structural system.
