III.Manuscript Requirements

(A) Manuscript structure requirements

0 Introduction

The Introduction section aims to introduce the background and purpose of the work, as well as the reviews of previous work and research in relevant fields (i.e. the summary of previous research progress) in brief texts, and explain the relationship between the present research and previous researches, the current research hot-spots, and existing problems, allowing readers to understand the profile of the article and guiding them to further read. The basic contents should include:

(1) briefly describe the cause and purpose of the present work (research background); (2) introduce the current status and trends of the research field at home and abroad (and describe the existing problems); (3) emphasize which of the existing problems in the present research is to be solved by the work, and the importance and significance of studying and solving these problems; and (4) state the research assumptions appropriately.

1 Materials and methods

This is an important part of the manuscript. Two aspects should be elaborated: what should be used in research (i.e. materials used in research) and how to make the research (i.e. methods used in research). If the method is based on the previous research, or even if it is improved on basis of the previous research, the reference must be indicated.

Different topics have different research methods. Taking experimental research methods as an example, the contents shall include (1) research object and its sampling; (2) application of instruments and equipment; (3) control of relevant factors and irrelevant factors; (4) operating procedures and methods; (5) definition of operational concept; (6) statistical methods of research results. For research articles based on geological surveys, Section 1 can be set as “Geological Background of Research Area”, which should include: (1) Technical methods or technical means used in the field survey and laboratory test (fieldwork technical route), and the main work (and its workload) completed; (2) the first-hand information obtained and basic data for the application of the comprehensive research, including use of the existing data of the predecessors; (3) method (technical route) used in indoor comprehensive research.

2 Results

The results are regarded as the core (the main part) of an article, mainly stating what data, laws, and findings are obtained through the experimental research (which may include the results and data of the experiments and research, the determined relationship, the observed or obtained effects, performance, etc.).

Expression of results: (1) data statistically processed, rather than original data; (2) charts showing regularity and contrast; (3) photos, which can vividly and objectively express the research results; (4) Text explaining the data, charts, and photos.

Attention should be paid to the following aspects for purpose of results writing: (1) the writing structure is arranged according to the factual materials obtained from the test, which can be divided into subsections or subsubsections by subheadings; (2) the objective results should be explained without any author's evaluation, analysis and reasoning; (3) The results shall be authentic, and no data or other results that do not conform to the subjective assumptions shall be deleted at will; (4) due to the large space occupied by charts and photos, charts or photos should be minimized if they can be expressed by words.

3 Discussion

Discussion is an important part of an article. This part contains what the authors summarize, generalize and discuss on basis of the information obtained from the research, their own comments and evaluation of significance.

The discussion section should include (1) theoretical analysis and explanation of various data or phenomena in the process of experimental observation; (2) evaluation on the scientificity of research methods, the correctness and reliability of their own results, comparison between their results and those of others, and explanation on the reasons; (3) theoretical significance of the experimental results and their guiding role and application value in practice; (4) discussion on the action mechanism or change laws; (5) limitations of this research and suggestions for further research.

4 Conclusion (and recommendation)

This is the essence of the article. It aims to answer what has been concluded, and the section should mainly include:

(1) Principles revealed by the research achievements and their universality (i.e. problems explained by the research results, regularities concluded, and theoretical or practical problems solved);

*(2) Whether there are any exceptions in the research or any problems that are still difficult to be solved in this article (and which problems are still unsolved), the similarities and differences with previously published articles, and their theoretical and practical significance;

*(3) Suggestions for further research.

It shall be noted that the conclusion is not a simple repetition of the abstract. The texts shall be concise and written on an item-by-item basis, 3-4 items are recommended.

(B) Content requirements

(1) The title of the article shall be clear, concise and innovative. Specific requirements:

● It should be explained in detail in a concise expression. If the title is not sufficient to summarize the content of the article, subtitle may be applied;

● It should be appropriate to its text, precise and clear. The title should reflect the content and the content should further explain the title fully;

● The content must be focused, themed, summarized and fairly self-explanatory, highlighting the innovative points of the article.

(2) For funded research programs, the source and number of the funding should be indicated.

(3) Generally, only the main participants are listed. A brief introduction of the first author and corresponding author should be attached: Name (birth year-), gender, educational background, title, main duties or research direction, E-mail.

(4) The abstract shall be independent and self-explanatory, i.e. necessary information can be obtained by reading the abstract. The content of the abstract includes the purpose, method, results and conclusions of the research, and the background and significance can also be appropriately stated, about 500 words. The English abstract is basically the same as the Chinese abstract and can be expanded appropriately. There are 5 to 8 keywords, which shall be strictly selected and the notional words shall be selected to reflect the central content of the article in a full, accurate and comprehensive manner. Specific requirements:

 Objective: Describe the problems to be solved in the article and their origin and cause (highlight the importance of the problems and the existing deficiencies appropriately, and point out what problems in the existing deficiencies need to be solved by your article);

 Methods: Explain the main means (methods) adopted in the article, and introduce the ways to use them when necessary;

 Results: Explain the main results obtained in the research content, and what data, laws and findings have been obtained;

 Conclusions: Explain the meaning, influence, and significance (theoretical or practical value, promotion prospect, etc.) of the research results.

(5) Generally, the whole article should not be more than 10 pages (including figures and tables).

(6) The article shall be in line with the genre of scientific articles, with clear theme, sufficient arguments, rigorous demonstration, credible conclusions, smooth expressions, and strict logic.
